OneDay Matram ?

"Hey machchaa, are you comin for Vande Mataram's screening??"...."No da, What will I do goin over there?.. pack da..." this was the conversation I had with one of my fellow hostelite on 7th sept. Yes, September 7, 2006 to mark the 125th year celebration of "Vande Mataram" creation. "Vande Mataram"...two magical words.... the national cry for freedom from British oppression during the freedom movement.

Why politicians are compelling to sing the song Nation-wide?.....Is it so necessary that singing few lines for a day will create spark in our mind and will motivate us to do something for nation??...After that conversation I went back to my room, unwillingly skipping the "Vande Mataram" screening program in CLT. I laid down on bed thinking of what magic was there in these words during freedom movement and now those are being used just for political fight?......after googling I went back to origin of 'Vande Mataram'. Around 1870, the British rulers of India had declared that singing of 'God Save the Queen' would be mandatory...At that time Bankimda wrote it in a spontaneous session, and those became the word to fight with British Raj. Means song which was originated because of compulsion of British song, today giving birth to controversy for compulsion of itself...what irony...Why people don't understand that compelling such things won't create patriotism...is our pride for nation limited to 'ONE DAY MATRAM'??...What difference will it make by singing a song for a ONE DAY and then fighting over presence or absence of 'X' personality( who is not even having Indian Origin) ?

The point is whether to celebrate it or not? Even on someone's Birthday we try do things as per one's liking, then what is wrong in singing a song for that day? Why some people went on street protesting against 'Vande Mataram' and sung 'Sare Jaha Se Achchaa' ? If our first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad had declared that 'Vande Mataram' should also be given equal status with 'Jana-Gana-Mana'....'Jana-Gana-Mana' song written for praising to a loyal welcome of George V on his visit to India. And the otherone 'Vande Mataram'....song to fight against British compulsion....then why people are fighting with it? Even our first ever national flag bears 'Vande Mataram' on it. What will affect you if you sing that song for ONE DAY MATRAM....? Nothing will change na? On 7th Sept. controversy, I will only say that , if you are compelling 'Vande Mataram' then you should sing that everyday....why only ONE DAY ? and those are opposing 'Vande Mataram' , they should at least sing it for ONE DAY.....at least show some respect to nation by singing it on its anniversary.

Vande Mataram, Jai Hind!

Thanx..
and Piyush....
its not about awareness...its about political fight which is going on such issues. The point of this fight is completely unexplored and people taking political advantage over this leaving the main purpose.

hi...
really wonderful thoughts..
I always think about these things...students playing with flags on republic day..independence day..and many such issues..
but never thought of putting them to people..people who know the all stuff..still do not wish to change themselves..

I totally agree with u...
we had an issue about national anthem to be played in movie theaters or not..anyways..apart from that..we need to check out why do we need this..? why the anthem is to be played in places like movie theaters..? just b cz we attend movies more than school prayers..?
I certainly respect national anthem..but everyone should ask himself if he's paying back his country by all means..?
n if not...can't u just attend the independence day function..stay calm for few minutes n sing our national anthem with pride...?

@Abhinav,
Yes ur right dude..if we ask people to sing our national anthem almost 30% can't sing it completely...
we hv to things by our heart not just becoz somebody is imposing those on you...

@Kanchan,
yes..everybody think like that but very few turn those thoughts in their acts...we hv to ask question to ourself..
so start from you...world will follow you...

@Sheetal,
earning dollars is not a bad thing but to forget wht ur country means to you is.
everyone wants to earn more money but you just hv to think m i paying back atleast single penny for my country??

Harshal, nice thoughts. They represent a large number of people. More than anything else I agree with your last five-six lines. I wish it could come true. I would have been even more glad to see you in CLT that evening! LoL.

right thinking. there is no harm in siging the song, and for that matter, what is the point opposing the song?? first of all, there should be any such point raised against it. if one is told to sing a patriotic song, whats wrong in it??

Hi Harsha,
I think today we really need such thoughts.
Just few days ago I had a debate with a frnd about settling abroad and his thought were just "Why should I think about my country and other people. I'll just settle down in Australia and njoy my life Instead why should I ruin my life living here and caring about people who ultimately are not going to be better. What difference is it going to make???"
I think this indifference of our people about our country and its progress is main reason for this.
"I will work in progressed India after 30 years and untill then I will Njoy my life in some progressed country. I dont think I am capable of helping India in the way from progressive to a progressed country." Don't you think if everybody thinks like this even after 300 years these ppl cant return India???
I am just telling this coz I myself hav realised that u need such occasions coz during ur day-to-day schedule u really forget all these things and such occasions are must for not letting u forget about our duties towards our country and forgetting might lead to such thoughts....

Apart from all these thing I think, Harsha, if you wish you will surely become a nice columnist ;-)

Hello Harsh,

It is well written and well researched. I liked the motivation of yours to understand the main theme behind vande matram rather than using it for notorious political use.Well thought of.
